Efficacy of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) in Premenstrual Syndrome, Labor, Childbirth, and Menopause: A Systematic Review of Clinical Trials

Context: Saffron, as a medicinal plant, is widely used to treat various diseases, especially among women. Therefore, this study was conducted review the studies on impact of saffron premenstrual syndrome (PMS), labor, childbirth, and menopause. Methods: This systematic review, based PICO process, systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, Web Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Persian databases, such Scientific Information Database (SID) Magiran, until February 2023. The search strategy. Strategy included keywords OR Crocus sativus Linn. safranal crocin using AND syndrome, postpartum depression, pregnancy anxiety, menopause, perimenopause, labor pain, active phase, delivery, episiotomy, pregnancy. Of 164 articles, 20 randomized controlled trials with score 3 above Jadad scale entered study. Results: results showed that has positive effects including improvement Bishop’s score, progress, reduction fatigue pain intensity, episiotomy healing. Additionally, it can improve mood psychological symptoms menopause PMS. two an effect depression. Conclusions: Saffron suggested plant help women’s complications. However, due limited number studies, recommended carry out further without limitations previous before applying in clinical medicine.
